Washington DC is about to receive a pretty important guest. Scratch that, Washington DC is about to receive THE MOST important guest when Pope Francis arrives in our Nation’s Capital next week. According to WMATA, “Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend events during the Papal visit, which will likely result in crowding and delays on trains and buses, and could produce near Inauguration ridership levels at selected stations.” Although all modes of transportation during the Pope’s visit will pose some challenges, experts agree that biking is the best way to get around. We’ve put together some helpful information for all those planning to BIKE while Pope Francis ROLLs (via Pope Mobile) through town.
- Expect for the roads that are officially closed due to papal events or security reasons will also be closed to bike traffic. The closures will impact the bike lane network in some areas of downtown. Click here for a list of road closures and restrictions to prepare.
- It may be more difficult to find bike parking, given the high possibility that there will be many more people on bikes than usual. Riders will need to lock their bikes to whatever is legally available, including some street signs, parking meters and many of the city’s bike racks.
- According to the Washington Post, if you use Capital Bikeshare, you may have trouble finding an available bike or an open spot to park because the road closures will make it difficult for staff to rebalance the bike network. Bike and Roll will be renting bikes from our National Mall and Union station locations throughout the duration of the Pope’s visit. We provide locks with rentals, so you don’t have to worry about finding the nearest bikeshare station to park your bike.
