Late Fall Hours at Bike and Roll DC

photo 3

What a weekend!

Daylight Savings Time ended, the Washington Monument’s lights shone for the last time, there was a partial solar eclipse… oh, and Sunday marked our last day of Fall hours!

Just like our clocks, we’re transitioning into Late Fall hours here today. This means that our Rental operations will close daily at 5:00PM at all locations, and that there are no more Sites@Nite tours to be had (until 2014 that is!)

Please plan accordingly when visiting Bike and Roll DC. Happy Late Fall, everyone!

Happy Halloween, DC!

Wondering what on earth you and your pals (or kiddies) are getting into this All Hallow’s Eve? Well, we’ve rounded up the best Halloween activities in our nation’s capital. Any of one of these is surely bound to fright and delight!

Trick or Treating in DC
For traditional Trick or Treating fun, checkout Halloween on the Hill which includes Hilloween: “Thursday, Oct. 31 from 5:30-7:30pm. This is one of the Hill’s best traditions: 7th Street SE closes between North Carolina Avenue and C Street SE so that families and neighbors can gather for hayrides, games and fun.” For the more worldy (or adult) Halloween-ers among your brood, head over to Embassy Row for Massachusetts Avenue’s Trick or Treat extravaganza. Instead of door to door, it’s country to country!

Hotel Helix Pumpkin Carving
The Helix Lounge will be dishing out pre-scooped pumpkins ready for carving at their 9th annual carving contest! Beginning at 6:00PM tonight, pumpkins will be handed out on a first come, first served basis. Prizes to be awarded for best carved, so start sketching your designs now!

Night of the Living Zoo
From 6:30-10:00PM tonight, join the creatures of Smithsonian’s National Zoo for a ghoulish night of fun! Event (21 and up) will include a live band, costume contest, palm readers, fire eaters, talking bats, and illusionists!

AFI Silver Theatre
Take a quick jaunt up to Silver Spring and drop in on the lovely AFI Silver Theatre over the next few nights for some classic horror flicks. Movies will include the likes of Ghostbusters, Shaun of the Dead, The Haunting, and Nosferatu.

Washington Walks Ghost Tours
In for a real scare? Take a two hour walking ghost tour of DC’s most haunted houses withWashington Walks, and learn all about the spirits that haunt the disctrict. Look out for Washingtonian ghouls that go bump in the night…

2013 Marine Corps Marathon Weekend

2008 Marine Corps Marathon Dumm winning 081030 MCM04 HiRez

It’s that time of year again!

After some “Is it on? Is it off?” shutdown debate, we’re all collectively rejoicing that this weekend’s Marine Corps Marathon is decidedly ON! The “MCM” is the fifth largest marathon in the United States and has been a true blue DC staple since 1976.

Bike and Roll DC would like to celebrate the marathon’s participants and viewers this year by offering a special $5 off discount with code “MCM” for runners or attendees to enjoy one of our guided tours or full day rentals from 10/24 – 10/28. Renting a bike is the perfect way for viewers to keep up with their runners, and a tour is a great pre-marathon non-strenuous activity too!

So keep those sneakers on and head over to Bike and Roll this weekend for some cross-training!

Top 3 Reasons DC is Glad the Shutdown is Over

were-back

Aaannnnd we’re back!

As many of you have heard by now, our Government is officially back in business! And while we could detail all of the serious, practical reasons DC residents are thrilled the 15 day ordeal has finally come to an end (seriously, hooray for furloughed workers returning to their jobs!!) we thought we’d tell you why we’re especially giddy things are back in order today…

1. National Parks and the National Mall reopen

Need we say more? DC has not been itself since barricading off our precious memorials! Good to have you back, NPS.

2. WMATA will bring back 8 car trains

We thought the metro would be less crowded during the shutdown, and it may have been, but that didn’t mean we were getting to work any earlier! 8 car trains for the win!

3. The Panda Cam will be back up

All of DC is waiting with baited breath to see how much our little panda cub has grown since the cameras were first shut off!

Most importantly, we can’t wait to resume our regularly scheduled tours and take our guests to see our capital’s memorials up close!

5 Things to Do in DC During the Shutdown

shutdown collage

Contrary to popular belief, there are still many things to see and do in DC during a government shutdown! Trust us and read on…

1. Visit Off-the-Mall Neighborhoods

Sure, our National Mall is truly awe inspiring and a must-see attraction. But that’s really just scratching the DC surface! Veer off the standard tourist’s path and discover the magic of U Street, Dupont Circle, Eastern Market, Georgetown, and many other amazing neighborhoods in DC.

2. See the Still Open Attractions

There are still plenty of museums and galleries open to the public in our Nation’s Capital– really, we promise. Such gems as the National Geographic Museum, Phillips Collection,Newseum, or National Building Museum are all more than worth a visit (or two, or three, or ten…)

3. Ride a Bike

The shutdown can’t shut us down! We may have had to edit some tour routes, but we’re still open and ready for business! Stop by to rent some bikes or join one of our thoroughly amazing bike or Segway tours. You know you want to!

4. Eat, Drink, and Be Merry

Shutdown specials abound for Government employees, but you can still enjoy the many fine and budget-friendly restaurant choices DC has to offer sans federal ID! In fact, why don’t you refer back to our Top 5 Cheap Eats list for ideas.

5. Get out of DC

There are so many great getaways right in DC’s backyard, and now is the time to take full advantage! We suggest you head down to Virginia to check out the very extraordinary Alexandria. There you can rent a bike from us, and check out all the quaint little city on the water has to offer.
